from the floor “debate” on the stupak amendment:

Mrs. BACHMANN. Mr. Speaker, it all begins with life and with protecting the most vulnerable among us, the unborn. Life is the watershed issue of our generation. How can one claim to call the destruction of innocent human life “health care”? Orwellian statements aside, it is the duty of government to preserve and protect human life. If we do nothing else tonight, let’s choose life.

Mr. SMITH of New Jersey. Mr. Speaker, abortion not only kills children; it harms women physically and psychologically, and it risks significant harm to subsequent children. We have and are going to have more disabling, because of abortion.

Mr. ELLSWORTH. Since this debate started, my goal has been to ensure Federal taxpayer dollars are not used to pay for abortions and to provide Americans with pro-life options on this exchange. I have been proud to work with Mr. Stupak and all my colleagues and the Catholic Bishops to make the goal a reality. Getting to this point has not been very easy, but today we’re on the brink of passing health care reform that honors and respects life at every stage, including the unborn.

Mr. PITTS. I urge my colleagues to stand with the majority of the American people, to oppose establishing a Federal Government program that will directly fund abortion on demand, to keep the government out of the business of promoting abortion as health care, and support this amendment.

Mr. PENCE. Ending an innocent human life is morally wrong, but it’s also morally wrong to take the taxpayer dollars of millions of Americans and use them to provide for a procedure that they find morally offensive. In the Congress of the United States, we have a responsibility to respect the moral beliefs of the majority of the American people.

Hey, guess what, I’m morally opposed to the Iraq war. Give me my money back.

tylercoates:

Over 600,000 science and engineering degrees are granted annually from American universities.(1)

The US produces only 120,000 science and engineering jobs per year (much less lately; the number may now be negative).(2)

That leaves 480,000 graduates per year without jobs in their chosen careers. Add to this over 250,000 H-1B, L-1, and trade visas each year. Half a million Americans are losing their jobs to cheap foreign technical workers every year. Another half million Americans waste their S&E degrees on non-S&E jobs.

But most importantly, he came into office amidst sweeping crises in the financial sector and did not do what needed to be done, and what had been done the last time the U.S. was sent careening into a depression because of Wall Street: he failed to push for tough financial reforms. Barack Obama needed to be the FDR figure who remade the American capital markets and made them fair again, and he barely laid a finger on the whole scene. Instead, he put the people who created the problem in charge of fixing the mess, and ended up bailing them out instead of the rest of the country, at huge current and (presumably) future cost. The total bill for the Bush-Obama bailout is certainly above ten trillion at this point — Inspector General Neil Barofsky thinks it might hit nearly $24 trillion ultimately — and this went through without much fanfare. Meanwhile, the congress is stuck in the mud, panicked at the thought of paying three or four trillion over a decade or so for a health care program.”

- Matt Taibbi (via recro) (via azspot)

The Please Stop Making Will Schuester Rap in Glee Petition

The Please Stop Making Will Schuester Rap in Glee Petition:
Dear Ryan Murphy,
